Conservation Projects

Time, weather, pollution, and vandalism have taken a heavy toll on the gravestones in the graveyard. Many stones readable in 1905 photos are now illegible; many are badly deteriorated, or have collapsed completely. Some limited funds have been used to mend a few stones, but the pace is slow. The graveyard stones need restoration or replacement.

A much larger problem is preserving and/or stabilizing the iconic 1830 cast iron fence and gates enclosing the 4th and Pine Street frontages. Estimates to correct the deficiencies are beyond the Conservancy’s current resources.

There are issues of drainage, walkways, lighting and signage that must be addressed for safety and security if the graveyard is to measure up to its significance to our Philadelphia heritage and to enhance the enjoyment of the many people who visit each year.
